John C. Frieden
John C. Frieden has been actively involved in the practice of law for over 40 years and is licensed to practice law in the States of Kansas and Missouri and practices law before state and federal district courts, including the Tenth Circuit of the U. S. Court of Appeals and Kansas appellate courts. Mr. Frieden has frequently acted as lead counsel in complex litigation matters including multiple class actions, complex labor and employment issues and mediations and arbitrations. Mr. Frieden has a diverse practice counseling clients in areas of business development, acquisitions, government contracts and gaming law. He has acted as counsel in matters favorably cited by federal and state courts throughout the United States, including the United States Supreme Court, the Tenth Circuit of the U. S. Court of Appeals, the U. S. District Courts for the Districts of Kansas, Western District of Missouri and Northern District of Oklahoma.
Mr. Frieden is frequently requested by clients to render opinions on a variety of federal and state issues and legislative matters, including interpreting state and federal legislation, drafting legislation and testifying before the Kansas legislature. Mr. Frieden has appeared on a number of issues before a variety of legislative committees. In 1994, Mr. Frieden successfully worked with legislative lobbyists in the Kansas Legislature in settling a class action on behalf of all Kansas retired military personnel following his successful litigation of the action before the United States Supreme Court. The case resulted in the largest legislative settlement in the history of Kansas. He has also worked closely throughout his practice with both Republican and Democrat legislative leaders on an array of issues. He also was successful in obtaining State approval of two state-owned casinos in Kansas.Mr. Frieden is one of three Kansas attorneys invited to become a member of the Federation of Regulatory Counsel, a national organization formed for the purpose of raising the standard of excellence in the practice of insurance regulatory law. He is also listed in Best Lawyers in America and has been named a “Super Lawyer” in the KC Magazine’s Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyer Section. He has acted as counsel in matters favorably cited by federal and state courts throughout the United States, including the United States Supreme Court, the Tenth Circuit of the U. S. Michael J. Unrein
Michael J. Unrein concentrates his practice of law on business transactions, health law, real estate law and worker’s compensation law. Mr. Unrein graduated from the University of Santa Clara in 1966 and received his law degree from Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas, in 1971. He served two years with the 69th Infantry Brigade prior to completing law school. Mr. Unrein is a member of the American Arbitration Association, Kansas Bar Association, the Kansas Association for Justice and Topeka Bar Association. He is a former member of Midwest Mediation and Arbitration. Mr. Unrein is admitted to the bar of the State of Kansas, and practices law before state and federal district courts, including the Tenth Circuit of the U. S. Court of Appeals and Kansas appellate courts.
Mr. Unrein provides legal representation to various clients throughout the State of Kansas, including large corporations, small businesses and individuals. He is a distinguished mediator, with over 20 years of mediation experience in litigated matters. Mr. Unrein has been a frequent lecturer at worker’s compensation seminars, and formerly served as an adjunct professor at Washburn University and guest lecturer Washburn University School of Law. Throughout his legal career, he has been selected to serve on the boards of numerous charitable, community and philanthropic organizations.

Randall J. Forbes
Randall J. Forbes has engaged in the practice of law with considerable trial experience for more than 35 years. Mr. Forbes has successfully represented clients in the fields of construction law, civil litigation, administrative law, employment law and business transactions. He taught pretrial and trial practice for several years at Washburn School of Law and has lectured on a variety of legal topics throughout his career, including but not limited to, construction law, school law, employment issues, trial practice, real estate and administrative law and procedure. He presently serves as General Counsel for the Kansas Board of Examiners in Optometry, Kansas Dental Board, Kansas Pharmacy Board, the Kansas State High School Activities Association and the Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority. Mr. Forbes has also counseled clients on legislative matters, rendered interpretive opinions to clients on legislation, drafting proposed legislation and testifying before the Kansas legislature. He has skillfully represented clients in state and federal district courts and appellate courts, including the Tenth and Fifth Circuits of the U. S. Court of Appeals, U. S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Kansas Supreme Court, Missouri Supreme Court, Tribal Court - Prairie Band Potawatomie Nation, United States Western District of Missouri, and U. S. Court of Federal Claims.
Mr. Forbes has previously served as part of the Litigation Section, Construction Law Section, Administrative Law Section, and Legislative Committee of the Kansas Bar Association. He has served as Chairman of the Litigation and Administrative Law sections. He is also a member of the Missouri Bar Association, American Bar Association and The National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel. For several years Mr. Forbes has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America, KC Magazine’s Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyer Section and the Top Lawyers Section of the American Lawyer & Corporate Counsel Guide – all in the practice area of Commercial Litigation. His community activities include being a Board Member and President of the Board of Directors for Community Resource Council, Family Service and Guidance Center, Shawnee Country Club and Topeka Country Club.

Kevin M. Fowler
Kevin M. Fowler is a former Judge Advocate General in the United States Army (1982-1985). After that, he has focused his practice on civil litigation. He has been involved in a number of complex litigation cases throughout his practice in both state and federal district courts and frequently participated as lead counsel for a number of clients in legislative and administrative matters. He also has extensive appellate experience before the Kansas Courts of Appeals and Supreme Court, multiple federal circuit courts, and successfully argued before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Fowler has counseled clients on legislative matters, drafting proposed legislation and testifying before the Kansas Legislature.
Brenda L. Head
Brenda L. Head has been actively involved in the practice of law for nearly 20 years. Ms. Head has considerable trial experience representing clients before state and federal district courts and administrative agencies. She focuses her practice of law on civil litigation, employment law, negligence law, products liability law, tort law, commercial law and appellate practice. Since 1992, Ms. Head has successfully represented clients before state and federal district courts, the Kansas appellate courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.
Eric I. Unrein
Eric Unrein graduated from the University of Texas School of Law as Order of the Coif in 1993, and served as Associate Editor of the University of Texas School of Law’s Review of Litigation. Following law school, Mr. Unrein served as a Law Clerk in the United States District Court, District of Kansas for the Honorable Dale E. Saffels and later in the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals for the Honorable Mary Beck Briscoe. Since 1996, Mr. Unrein has served as counsel on a number matters involving complex litigation, antitrust, products liability and served on a number of steering committees in various class action lawsuits throughout the United States. Mr. Unrein is admitted to practice law in both Kansas and Illinois, as well as state and federal district courts in Kansas and the Northern District of Illinois, and before the Seventh and Tenth Circuits of the U. S. Court of Appeals.
Clinton E. Patty
Clint Patty is a skilled and experienced practitioner of law in the State of Kansas. For more than a decade, he has handled gaming law, labor and employment law, litigation, business, administrative and legislative issues. Mr. Patty frequently participates as lead counsel for a number of clients in litigation, labor, legislative and administrative matters. He is general counsel for the Association representing asphalt and concrete producers across the State of Kansas and serves as outside counsel for two state-owned casinos in Kansas. He also has extensive appellate experience before the Kansas Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, and litigation experience in state and federal district courts. Mr. Patty throughout his practice has handled business and legislative matters, drafting proposed legislation and testifying before the Kansas Legislature. For the past several years, he has been retained in a number of labor and employment matters, including acting as lead counsel in multiple civil cases, arbitrations and collective bargaining negotiations on behalf of several public employee unions.
Matthew R. Bergmann
Matthew R. Bergmann‘s practice of law is centered in the areas of administrative, business, public affairs and legislation, real estate, workers compensation and general practice matters. He was admitted to practice law in Kansas in 2005, at both the state and federal levels. Mr. Bergmann was named a partner of Frieden, Unrein & Forbes, L.L.P., in April 2010.
Mr. Bergmann often litigates cases before administrative and district courts in Kansas, the Kansas Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board and the Kansas Court of Appeals. He also assists in the firm’s representation of client interests at the municipal and state levels. Mr. Bergmann’s practice focuses heavily on examining and analyzing specific client needs and negotiating favorable resolutions on behalf of clients.
Mr. Bergmann’s preparatory education took place at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas where he graduated, magna cum laude, in 2001. He received his juris doctorate from the Washburn University School of Law in 2005. During his preparatory and legal education Mr. Bergmann studied internationally, participating in coursework at Orebro University in Orebro, Sweden, as well as King’s College and the London School of Economics in London, England.
In 2008 Mr. Bergmann, was named the Topeka Bar Association’s Outstanding Young Lawyer. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Topeka Bar Association, and is an active member of the Topeka Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association, American Bar Association, the Topeka Active 20/30 Club and Topeka Lawyers Club. . Mr. Bergmann enjoys spending time with his family, as he and his wife devote much of their time to their two young sons.
Timothy D. Resner
Timothy D. Resner joined Frieden, Unrein & Forbes LLP as an associate attorney in August of 2011. Mr. Resner’s areas of practice include civil litigation, corporate law, labor and employment law, administrative law and construction law. Mr. Resner graduated from Washburn University School of Law with honors in May of 2011. He is licensed to practice law in both the state and district courts of Kansas. Mr. Resner originally joined Frieden, Unrein & Forbes, LLP as a law clerk in June of 2009, and provided litigation support to the firm in that role before moving to an associate position.
